Directions for making the perfect church bag

You will need:

Scissors

Sewing machine

Iron/ ironing board

Pelon (Decor Bond)

Thread

34 inches of Trim

16 inches of Material for the top and pockets

20 inches of Material for the bottom and straps

16 inches of Material for the inside

This mat and stuff is what I use to cut out my pieces, but you don't have to.

Cut 16 x 8 piece for the top part of your bag. Also cut 16 x 8 pelon and iron it to your top piece of your bag.
Cut 16x15 inces for the bottom of your bag and 4x20 inches for the straps. Also cute pelon for these pieces and iron them on.

Cut 16x30 inches for the inside or 16x15inches on the fold. (I used to iron on the pelon to the inside piece, but to save money and time I have been leaving the pelon off.)

Sew both top pieces to bottom piece at each end of bottom.

If you have beads or other trim that you don't want the ribbon to show you would add it at this step. Putting the ribbon between the bottom piece and top piece and sewing alltogether. You can do a basting stitch to hold it in place.

I then set that stuff aside and work on my straps. I iron on pelon to the straps to make them sturdy. After ironing on the pelon I sew right sides together using a basting stitch. Then I iron down the seams flat.
Next I rip out the stitch. This makes it easier for me to iron down evenly.

Then I fold wrong sides together and iron down.

Finally I sew on top of the straps leaving the ends open as they will be sewn into the bag.

My mom always taught me to iron my seams to help hold the stitch.
At this point I like to sew the top/bottom piece to the inside piece at the top with a basting stitch. Then iron the seam down away from eachother. And then unstitch. This will help when you are putting the two pieces together at the very end.

I sew the top/bottom piece up the sides with right sides together. And do the same with the inside piece. I take my Omni Edge which has angles at the bottom and use that to mark the corners of both the top/bottom piece and the inside piece. I want the bottom of my bag to be 4 inches wide so I put the angle so that the edge measures 4 inches (or as it reads on my omni edge 1/4). I make sure that the edge of the bag is lined up with the one angle/black line on the left side of this photo.Turn the bag so that they look like this putting the wrong sides together and the inside piece inside the outside bag piece.I pin the edges together inserting the straps about 3 inches from the side seams on each side. (You can also add any trim to this area if you would like it hanging out the top. We have used rick rack or even put in ribbon for a tie.)I then sew the inside, top/bottom, and straps together like so. Make sure the inside piece does not slip down causing you to not catch that in your stitch.

And whala!!!
Good Luck!!! You can email me your finish product, I would love to see it!
